Equality cannot wait.

Urge President Biden to instruct the US Archivist to certify and publish the ERA in the Constitution!

Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)

November, 2024– The 2024 election results puts the future of women's equality at stake! It is time to protect against the rollback of rights by enshrining gender equality in our US Constitution– ask President Biden to instruct the US Archivist to publish the ERA!

Take direct action by signing this note to President Biden and Vice President Harris.

A brief review: The Equal Rights Amendment was first drafted in 1923 by suffragist Alice Paul. In 1972, the language used today was sent to the states for ratification, after being approved by overwhelming majorities in both the US House (354-24) and Senate (84-8).

Article V of the US Constitution, which establishes the amendment process, provides that an amendment becomes part of the Constitution when it is passed by 2/3 of both chambers of Congress and ratified by ¾ of the state legislatures.

Illinois ratified the ERA in 2018, shortly after Nevada in 2017. In 2020, Virginia became the 38th state to ratify, thereby meeting the 3/4 state threshold. However, in light of questions about the amount of time lapsed between the original proposal and final state ratification, the Archivist of the US refused to record and certify Virginia’s ratification and publish the ERA as the 28th Amendment to the US Constitution.

The ERA has met all requirements to be added to the US Constitution. LWV urges that it be officially recognized as the 28th Amendment!

Run for office!

August 2024– While our attention right now is naturally on the November 5th general election, we want to remind you that the election season will continue after that into the Consolidated Election of 2025 when we will elect our local officials. We cannot stress enough the importance of local elections!

Elected officials– mayor, clerk, city council members and school board members– make decisions that directly affect our community. Important decisions on public transit, school quality, affordable housing, policing and public safety, sanitation, water quality, job training programs, economic development, how tax dollars are spent, and much more.

Not only is it important that you vote in the Consolidated Election, but it is also important that we have good quality candidates from which to choose.

Interested in our schools? Want to make a difference and improve education opportunities for the children of our community? Consider running for a seat on the school board! Not for you? Maybe you have a family member or neighbor that would be an asset to the school board. Encourage qualified and interested members of our community to run for a seat on the school board.

Electoral College Abolition–
LWV Position

The League believes that the direct-popular-vote method for electing the President and Vice President is essential to representative government. We believe, therefore, that the Electoral College should be abolished.

We support the use of the National Popular Vote Compact as one acceptable way to achieve the goal of the direct popular vote for election of the president until the abolition of the Electoral College is accomplished.
